Monkey D. Luffy – also known as “Straw Hat” Luffy, after his signature headgear – is the protagonist of the manga and anime One Piece. The son of an infamous pirate captain, Monkey D. Dragon, promised his dying mother that he would become king of the pirates one day.
By eating a cursed fruit – the Gomu Gomu no Mi, or “Gum-Gum Fruit” – Luffy gained the body of an elastic man. He can stretch and twist his body to incredible degrees, which comes in handy on many occasions during his adventures.
